From The Heart
What profession, other than you own, would you like to try?
Honestly, this profession fits me so well, I can't imagine what else I would try or be any good at.
Who are your heroes?
My mother, who introduced me to art, music, travel, tennis, had a profound influence on me. And my childhood tennis coach who became a friend and life mentor.
Who was your professional mentor?
My first physical diagnosis professor had a hand in inventing the endoscope, changing health care diagnosis worldwide. He was so down to earth and wise in his advice. Later, there was a geriatric psychiatrist at the VA who taught me so much about leadership, mental health and human behavior, particularly in older people. Surprisingly, he was the one who helped shape my interest in health care administration.
Which talent would you most like to have?
I would love to be able to play the piano and speak four languages — goals for the near future.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Some people do one or two extraordinary things that everyone recognizes as "achievements." My role is to keep a lot of talented people rowing in the same direction every day and ensure we're learning from our experiences — all in an effort to resolve people's health issues.
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Homer's Odysseus. The first captivating stories for me were The Odyssey and The Iliad.
