A comprehensive, nationwide study conducted by Evercare and the National Alliance for Caregiving finds that the cost of caregiving is more than previous studies -- more than half of caregivers surveyed are spending on average $5,500 a year - 10% of their median household income to care for an aging loved one.

Evercare is expanding the STAR+PLUS program to 22 additional counties in Texas. According to Diane Schimmelbusch, executive director of Evercare Texas, the move is a great step forward for the company and patients alike - "We're very excited about the expansion… Our hope is that we can have the same experience that we had in Harris County and that we have a positive impact on these people's lives."

Preparing for Medicare Part D
In preparation for the launch of Medicare's prescription drug coverage program, Evercare Chairman Dr. John Mach Jr., encourages physicians to be "proactive in educating patients about the benefits of Part D, since patients are much more likely to adhere to their treatment regimens when cost becomes less of an issue." For senior citizens in particular, he says, "Medications are the single most important treatment regimen in doctors' armamentarium for fighting chronic illnesses. Seniors are the most likely to have these types of illnesses, but are the least likely to report that they cannot afford their medications."

Educational Events Planned to Inform Medicare Recipients
Evercare and the National Alliance for Caregiving partnered to co-host a "town hall on the telephone" to answer questions about Medicare from seniors and their caregivers. Dr. Fred Buckwold, medical director of Evercare, says the telephone town hall was designed with the senior community in mind, "To be used a vehicle for delivery of more information."

At the dawn of Evercare's expansion into Houston, care coordinator Barbara Harper says of the compassionate care she provides, "The in-care services Evercare provides make the job much more rewarding. I love home health and I love being in the field, as opposed to in a hospital… I have done hospital nursing, but I truly prefer being one on one with patients in their own environments."

In an opinion piece, Evercare Chairman Dr. John Mach, Jr. argues in favor of pay-for-performance programs, citing Evercare's three-pronged approach with nursing homes as evidence that they work: 1) use nurse practitioners to augment the provision of primary care services for NH residents; 2) align nursing facilities' financial interests with improved clinical outcomes; and 3) work closely with nursing homes to track and improve several sets of quality measures pertinent to this population.
